New Yorkers Hold Silent Vigil

Silently, they’ve come to remember the horrors of Sept. 11, 2001, in a chapel that once stood in the shadow of the World Trade Center.
Never Forget
St. Paul’s Chapel survived the destruction, and for a time served as an all-purpose relief center for rescue workers after the attacks.

A silent vigil was held Wednesday night and continued into the early morning Thursday. A handful of those who had volunteered two years ago gathered in and around the chapel. Inside, candles flickered at the front of the sanctuary and photographs of victims were spread upon the altar.

Lisa Heller sat alone in a pew for about an hour. The 34-year-old elementary school guidance counselor said she lost six friends in the attack. She said it’s been a “big loss” and that while the healing has been going on for two years now, “it’s been a long two years.”

The Rev. Julie Taylor volunteered at the chapel two years ago. She said healing would take a lifetime.

“There’s no getting over it,” she said. “There’s just getting through it.”
